Elon Musk, under fire for recent policy changes at Twitter Inc., is asking users if he should step down as head of the social media site.
With about four hours to go and 14 million votes cast, 57% of participants said yes. The billionaire owner of Twitter and CEO of Tesla Inc. will abide by the results of the poll, he promised in a tweet on Sunday. Three of the hottest topics in the US turned overnight about the platform itself, including “VOTE YES” and “CEO of Twitter.”
Musk was in Qatar to watch the World Cup final between Argentina and France and tweeted his poll after the match. He also promised to conduct a vote on any major policy changes in the future, apologizing for not doing so sooner.
Following his takeover of Twitter, Musk has endured criticism for his sweeping changes to the social network — such as firing more than half of its staff and bringing back previously blocked accounts — as well as calls to refocus on Tesla, whose share price has fallen sharply. Since he reluctantly completed the takeover of Twitter at the end of October, he has devoted much of his time to social services.
He was posting late Thursday night after getting mixed up with journalists, Twitter’s most engaged and active contributors. The company banned some of them from major publications like the Washington Post and DailyExpertNews, claiming they are doxxing its location. The move was condemned by, among others, the American Civil Liberties Union and even the United Nations, which called it a “dangerous precedent”.
Over the weekend, Twitter also announced and withdrew a policy change under which it would block accounts “made exclusively” to promote competing social networks. That decision led to the suspension of at least one high-profile account, prompting Musk to say he will amend the policy hours after its introduction. The Twitter Safety account later offered a poll on whether it should have policies for deleting accounts that promote other social media platforms.
