San Francisco:
Dramatic video surfaced yesterday of a man attacking the husband of former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with a hammer in their San Francisco home last October.
The police body footage released by a court shows suspect David DePape and Paul Pelosi standing side by side just inside the house.
The situation seems relatively calm, but both men have their hands on the hammer. DePape wears a sweater and shorts while Paul Pelosi, 82, wears just a shirt.
A police officer is heard to say, “What’s the matter man?” followed by “Drop the hammer.”
Soon after, the alleged assailant punches Paul Pelosi and the police rush in and arrest him.
Paul Pelosi is seen lying motionless on the floor.
DePape, a 42-year-old public nudity activist, has denied attempted murder and other charges related to the break-in.
He told police he planned to kidnap Nancy Pelosi. She was not home at the time.
Paul Pelosi was knocked unconscious and spent nearly a week in the hospital, where he underwent surgery.
Nancy Pelosi, who was replaced this month by Kevin McCarthy after Republicans won control of the House of Representatives in November’s election, said she had not seen the footage.
“I don’t even know if I’ll see it,” she told reporters on Thursday.
“I mean, it would be really hard to see an attempt on my husband’s life,” added Pelosi.
