Singapore:
A Singapore court on Friday sentenced two Malaysian nationals of Indian origin to 10 months in jail for trying to smuggle a compatriot out of the country by hiding him in the back of a truck.
Sharan Raj Loganathan, 26, and Ramesh Munusamy, 44, have pleaded guilty to attempting to illegally help Mohamad Izuwan Che Mohd Abd Khoha leave the Tuas checkpoint on July 19, The Straits Times newspaper reported.
Singapore is connected to Peninsular Malaysia by a causeway on the north side and a bridge at Tuas on the north-west side.
According to court documents, 32-year-old Izuwan was caught transporting more than 11,900 e-cigarette pods and 8,657 e-cigarette devices to Singapore on July 17, after which his passport was confiscated.
Smoking is banned in public places in Singapore and e-cigarettes are not allowed.
On July 19, Izuwan attempted to return to Malaysia by hiding in the cargo area of Ramesh's truck.
On August 28, Izuwan was sentenced to seven months in prison for his offences.
Persons found guilty of assisting others to cross Singapore's borders illegally could face a minimum jail term of six months and a fine of up to SGD 6,000.
