Washington:
An American judge ordered Thursday that an Indian researcher at an American university would not be removed from the country, after his arrest and threat of expulsion for alleged Hamas tires.
The detention of Badar Khan Suri, a post -doctoral fellow at Georgetown University in the American capital, came as fears that are mounted in the academic world that freedom of research and speech is challenged for two months in the new term of US President Donald Trump.
Mr. Suri's lawyer demanded his release and criticized the arrest as a “targeted, retaliation detence” that was intended “to” remain silent, or at least to limit and cool, his speech “, as well as those of others” supporting Palestinian rights “.
At the beginning of Thursday evening, Judge Patricia Tolliver Giles of the Eastern District of Virginia Court Mr. Suri “will not be removed from the United States unless and until the court carries out an opposite order.”
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), who also submitted an emergency movement to stop the deportation, said that Mr. Suri was being held in an immigration center in Louisiana.
“Cracks someone from their home and family, dismiss them from their immigration status and only hold them on the basis of the political position, is a clear attempt by President Trump to silence different opinions,” said ACLU immigrant rights and lawyer Sophia GREGG.
“That is clearly unconstitutional.”
On Wednesday, the French government condemned the removal of a French space scientist intended to attend a conference in Houston after civil servants had searched his smartphone and found what they called “hateful” reports against American policy.
“Dr. Khan Suri is an Indian national who has received a visa to enter the United States to continue his doctoral research into peace building in Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Georgetown University in a statement.
“We are not aware of the fact that he is doing illegal activities, and we have received no reason for his detention.”
Neither State Secretary Marco Rubio “nor any other government officer has claimed that Mr. Suri has committed a crime or, indeed, violated a law,” said his lawyer in court.
The application accused the US government of having held Mr Suri “on the basis of his family cat and constitutionally protected free speech.”
Fellow arrested
Mr. Suri According to the university website, Mr. Suri Fellow in the Alwaleed bin Talal Center of Georgetown for the Muslim-Christian Insight, according to his house in Arlington, Virginia, according to Polico, who first reported about the story.
Tricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security, said on X that Mr. Suri was a foreign exchange at the University of Georgetown, who actively spread Hamas propaganda and promotes anti-Semitism on social media. “
McLaughlin accused him of “making connections with a well -known or suspected terrorist who is a senior advisor to Hamas.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided that the researcher was subject to deportation under a provision of immigration legislation that makes expulsion possible if the presence of the visa holder in the United States is determined to threaten the US foreign policy, she added.
Hamas is a terrorist organization designated by the US.
Georgetown University said that it is “his rights of the members of the community to free and open research, consultation and debate, even if the underlying ideas can be difficult, controversial or offensive.”
With reference to a petition submitted by Mr Suri's lawyer, Politrico reported that Mr Suri's wife is an American citizen of Palestinian descent and that the couple believe they are the target because the government suspects that they are opposed to American policy against Israel.
