London:
An Indian-born doctor in Scotland was sentenced on Wednesday to 12 years in prison after being found guilty of sexual offenses against 47 female patients aged over 35 years.
Krishna Singh, a 72-year-old general practitioner (GP) from North Lanarkshire, was charged with kissing, groping, taking inappropriate exams and making sloppy remarks, charges he had denied at his trial last month at the High Court in Glasgow.
“You undermined the reputation of the medical profession and damaged the confidence of the female patients,” Judge Lord Armstrong told Singh at a hearing.
The GP had maintained that the patients were wrong and that some of the studies were what he had learned during medical school in India. But he was later found guilty of numerous sex crimes, which took place between 1983 and 2018.
“Krishna Singh is now facing the consequences of his atrocious and predatory behaviour,” said Detective Stephen Morris, of the Specialist Crime Division at Police Scotland.
“Singh was a physician and was in a position of trust when he committed this sexual abuse. The victims showed great courage in coming forward with vital information, ensuring he was held accountable for his actions and ultimately convicted,” Morris said.
“I hope this sentence gives them a sense of closure and sends a clear signal that all reports of sexual abuse, regardless of the passage of time, will be thoroughly investigated by Police Scotland and that victims everywhere will be supported,” he said. .
Police Scotland detectives launched an investigation into Singh after a woman came forward in 2018 to denounce him. He was subsequently arrested and charged in April 2018.
Singh was seen as a respected member of the community and even awarded the royal MBE honor for his contribution to medical services. The doctor was subsequently convicted of 54 charges against the victims, the crimes of which mainly consisted of multiple sexual and indecent assault.
He was found unproven on nine other charges and found not guilty on a further two.
