Indian-US Congresswoman Raja Krishnamoorthi has won the Illinois Democratic primary with a decisive mandate, successfully overcoming a highly concerted campaign by his opponent Junaid Ahmed.
Krishnamoorthi, who is very popular in Illinois’ eighth congressional district, defeated Junaid Ahmed by more than 71 percent of the vote.
“I am honored that the Democratic primary voters in Illinois’ eighth congressional district voted overwhelmingly and decisively in support of my re-election campaign to Congress,” Krishnamoorthi said.
“My constituents want peace, progress and prosperity. In Congress, I am for the middle class, for women’s reproductive rights, and against inflation and rising gas prices. I will work tirelessly to address these issues in the coming months,” he said. .
“We are now turning our attention to November, where our fundamental freedoms and human rights are on the agenda,” Krishnamoorthi said.
The three-term congressman will face Republican Chris Dargis in the Nov. 8 general election.
