London:
A Scotland Yard police officer in India was found guilty of “rude” and “aggressive” behavior towards a female driver during a traffic accident in London.
Trainee Detective Ajitpal Lotay, who is attached to the Metropolitan Police’s South East Command Unit, appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday and was charged with an offense under Section 4A of the UK’s Public Order Act.
Ajitpal Lotay was found to have been involved in an altercation with a lone woman who was driving another vehicle and during the exchange he showed his warrant and demanded that she move her car.
“T/DC Ajitpal Lotay’s behavior was completely wrong. He identified himself as an officer and was rude and aggressive towards the female driver, who was so concerned about his behavior that she reported it, thinking he was fake,” said Chief Inspector Trevor Lawry. of the South East Command Unit at the Met Police.
“The Met is driven by the values of professionalism, integrity, courage and compassion. We only want the best and will always act when our employees fail to live up to the exemplary standards we and the public expect,” he said.
The charge relates to an incident that occurred when Ajitpal Lotay was off duty in southwest London in February this year.
The woman took a photo of the officer and his vehicle and reported it to the police.
Ajitpal Lotay was subsequently stopped driving the same vehicle in June and was interviewed under caution before being charged under the Public Order Act.
The Met Police said the Professional Standards Directorate is aware of the charges and the officer has been placed with limited duties.
Now that criminal proceedings have been completed, the officer will be subject to a misconduct hearing, it added.
