A 33-year-old doctor of Indian descent was killed here after carjackers mowed him down as he tried to flee in his stolen car, while his girlfriend was horrified at the tragedy, according to US media reports.
On Wednesday, Dr. Rakesh “Rick” Patel of Silver Spring Maryland out of his Mercedes Benz to give his girlfriend a package.
The carjackers saw an opportunity, jumped in his car and drove off. He ran after them and managed to get in front of his car.
However, the carjackers hit and killed him, while Patel’s girlfriend looked on in horror, according to 7 News.
Patel was a physician at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and trained as an intensive care worker, NBC4 Washington TV reported.
Patel was caring, sociable and smart, his father, Dr. Rajnikante Patel, to NBC4 Washington TV. His life was “taken away for no reason,” he said.
“I always called him my baby,” said his mother, Charulatta Patel. He was the youngest of five children, two of whom are also doctors.
The murder was meaningless, Patel’s mother added. “What for? A car?” the NBC4 Washington TV quoted her as saying.
The Washington Police Department has announced a $25,000 reward for the carjackers’ details.

The Medstar hospital where Patel worked released a statement saying: “We are heartbroken to hear of the sudden passing of Dr. Rakesh (Rick) Patel. He served his residency here, had completed a fellowship in Infectious Diseases and was currently training as a Critical Care Fellow Dr. Patel will be greatly missed.”
