The head of the domestic intelligence service of Israel, Ronen Bar, has announced his resignation and will resign on 15 June, Israeli media reported late on Monday, six weeks after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tried to expel the security head.
The Shin Bet, which handles research into the fight against terrorism, is central to a growing political struggle that Netanyahu's right -wing coalition government against a range of critics, ranging from members of the security institution to families of hostages in Gaza.
Netanyahu said on March 16 that he had lost confidence in the bar long ago and that trust in the head of the Interior Security Service, whose roles include terrorism and security for government officials, was mainly crucial in a wartime.
