Japan’s Defense Ministry is making arrangements to develop multiple long-range missiles with a range of up to about 3,000 kilometers (1,860 miles) and aims to deploy them in the 2030s, Kyodo News reported Saturday, citing a source familiar with the matter.
The government wants to deploy a missile with a range of 2,000 km by the early 2030s and a hypersonic missile with a range of 3,000 km by 2035 that can range anywhere in North Korea and some parts of China, Kyodo said.
Japan this month unveiled its biggest military buildup since World War II with a $320 billion plan to buy missiles capable of hitting China and ready it for ongoing conflict as regional tensions and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine fuel war fears.
