Boakai won by a margin of only 20,567 votes.
Monrovia:
Political veteran Joseph Boakai was declared the winner of Liberia’s presidential election on Monday, defeating incumbent George Weah, the National Electoral Commission (NEC) said after counting votes.
Boakai won with 50.64 percent of the vote, compared to 49.36 percent of the vote for former international football star Weah, Davidetta Browne Lansanah, chair of the committee, told reporters.
Boakai won by a margin of only 20,567 votes.
However, Weah already admitted defeat on Friday evening, based on the results of more than 99.98 percent of the polling stations.
However, the head of the commission said it had received two calls from Weah’s party on Friday over the conduct of the elections in Nimba County.
The committee has 30 days to investigate the matter and reach a decision, she said.
