Kamala Harris visited Seoul after a trip to Japan.
Seoul:
A blunder by Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday turned US policy on its head when she declared the “major” alliance with communist North Korea — rather than South Korea, where she spoke.
“So the United States shares a very important relationship, which is an alliance with the Republic of North Korea. And it’s an alliance that is strong and sustainable,” Harris said at the beginning of her speech in the Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, on Thursday. where she visited at the end of a tour to Japan and South Korea.
Apparently ignoring her misstep, Harris delivered the rest of the speech, which was a forceful reaffirmation of Washington’s alliance with Seoul in the face of nuclear-armed North Korea.
“I can’t say enough that the United States’ commitment to the defense of the Republic of Korea is rock solid and that we will do everything we can to make sure it has meaning in every way the words suggest,” she said.
“This includes our comprehensive deterrence commitment, which is supported by the full range of US military capabilities.”
North Korea fired two ballistic missiles on Thursday, the Seoul military said, the third launch from Pyongyang in less than a week and just hours after Harris left South Korea.
