Nand Mulchandani, a man of Indian descent who studied at a school in Delhi, has been named the first-ever Chief Technology Officer of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The announcement for the coveted position was made by CEO William J Burns in a blog post and also shared on social media.

According to the CIA statement, Mr. Mulchandani has more than 25 years of experience in Silicon Valley and the Department of Defense (DoD). It added that Mr Mulchandani brings “substantial expertise from the private sector, startup and government to the CIA”.
Sharing the development, Mr Burns said: “Since my confirmation, I have prioritized focusing on technology and the new CTO position is a very important part of that effort. I am delighted that Nand has joined our team and his extensive experience in this critical new role.”
In his role as CTO, Mr Mulchandani will ensure the Agency uses cutting edge innovations, the statement said. In addition, “scanning the horizon for tomorrow’s innovations to advance the CIA’s mission” will also be on Mr. Mulchandani’s agenda as CTO.
After degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics from Cornell, Mr. Mulchandani received a Masters of Science degree in Management from Stanford and a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard. Before his new position with the CIA, Mr. Mulchandani was the CTO and Acting Director of DoD’s Joint Artificial Intelligence Center.
He is the co-founder and CEO of several successful startups such as Oblix (acquired by Oracle), Determina (acquired by VMWare), OpenDNS (acquired by Cisco), and ScaleXtreme (acquired by Citrix).
Mr Muchandani studied at the Bluebells School International in Delhi between 1979 and 1987.
