A man was shot and killed Sunday morning on a subway in lower Manhattan, police said.
The victim, whose name police have not released, was shot in the chest around 11:40 a.m. while on a northbound Q train entering Canal Street station, according to New York police. Officials have not provided any information about the events leading up to the shooting.
The fire service said two people were taken to Bellevue Hospital but did not provide information about their condition.
The attacker fled to street level and was not apprehended, police said about an hour after the shooting.
The shooting happened just under six weeks after a gunman shot 10 people aboard an R train in Brooklyn, injuring dozens in the wake of what officials said was a terror attack.
The violence has colored perceptions that the metro is unsafe as the city recovers from the coronavirus pandemic.
Social media users described seeing the shots and people running from the train after the late morning shooting.
The shooting prompted transit officials to divert the N and Q trains while police investigated the shooting. Officials advised riders to expect delays on the E, N, Q and R lines in both directions, as the trains shared local tracks.
