A police officer in Rochester, NY, was killed and another injured Thursday night in what police described as an ambush.
Officials did not immediately provide further details about the circumstances of the shooting, which took place Thursday night on Bauman Street, north of the city center.
At a news conference Friday morning, Rochester Police Chief David Smith identified the slain officer as Anthony Mazurkiewicz, a 29-year veteran of the department. He was shot in the upper body at least once. A second officer, Sino Seng, who had been with the department for eight years, was shot in the lower body, the chief said, and was recovering.
Police did not say whether anyone had been arrested in connection with the shooting, describing in a press release a regional investigation “to bring to justice who is responsible for this heinous act.”
A woman who police described in a press release as a bystander was also shot; she was being treated for injuries that police said were not life-threatening.
At Friday morning’s press conference, Rochester Mayor Malik Evans said a large-scale investigation is underway. Hours before the shooting, Mayor Evans had declared a state of emergency in response to a spate of shootings in the city. About 200 people have been shot in the city so far this year.
“Tony Mazurkiewicz and Sino Seng were out yesterday to combat the violence and carnage that I and the chief have been talking about for the past six months,” Mayor Evans said at the news conference.
This is a story in development.
