The Democratic National Convention opened with a fiery speech by US President Joe Biden against Donald Trump, a former US president who faces multiple lawsuits and survived an assassination attempt.
The DNC, the party's biggest event of the year, has officially named US Vice President Kamala Harris as its candidate for the 2024 US presidential election. The candidate will compete against Donald Trump, who is seeking a second term.
The four-day event, which is taking place in Chicago, kicked off yesterday and saw Joe Biden deliver a fiery speech against Trump, calling him a “loser.” “He called soldiers who gave their lives for this country suckers and losers. Who does he think he is?” Biden asked. “Trump bows down to (Vladimir) Putin. I never have and Kamala Harris never will,” President Biden said.
On the first day, President Biden criticized Trump's “America First” doctrine, which he said had damaged the country's international image. He argued that it stood in stark contrast to his own administration's efforts to unite Europe and counter Russian aggression.
Kamala Harris will give a major speech on August 22, the final day of the event, but one of the standout speakers today will be her husband, Doug Emhoff, a successful attorney. If Harris wins, Emhoff will be the first “first gentleman” of the United States.
The convention also served as a send-off for Joe Biden, who withdrew his nomination in an unprecedented move in modern American electoral history. In 1968, President Lyndon B Johnson declared he would not seek re-election in the midst of the Vietnam War.
The fiery speech was followed by a four-minute standing ovation and a surprise appearance by Kamala Harris on stage to thank President Biden for his “incredible” performance.
“I love you,” the 81-year-old president told the crowd through tears, to deafening cheers. It was less than a month after he withdrew from the White House race at the expense of Donald Trump and passed the torch to his vice president.
Today, former US President Barack Obama will pass the baton of the party's future to Ms. Harris. Obama posted on social media that in his speech at the Democratic National Convention he will outline “what's at stake” and why Harris and her running mate Tim Walz “should be our next president and vice president.”
Kamala Harris will hold a rally ahead of Obama's speech at the Milwaukee basketball arena where Trump attended the Republican convention a month ago. The 18,000-seat arena was deliberately chosen to pinch Trump, who has been shocked to see the U.S. president's deputy filling the halls. In a recent poll, Ms. Harris had a marginal lead over Donald Trump.
In addition to Obama, Hilary Clinton, the first woman to secure the nomination of a major American party for president, also addressed the delegates yesterday. “As president, she (Kamala Harris) will always stand with us and she will be a fighter for us. She will fight to lower costs for hardworking families, open the doors wide to good-paying jobs and, yes, she will restore abortion rights across the country,” Mrs. Clinton said.
