Nablus, Palestinian Territories:
A Palestinian prisoner watchdog said Tuesday that a man shot dead by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank the day before had been released during the November ceasefire in the Gaza war.
The Palestinian Prisoners Club reported that the 18-year-old was released on November 25 during the week-long ceasefire that saw dozens of Palestinian prisoners exchanged for dozens of Israeli hostages held in Gaza since October 7.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah reported that Tariq Ziad Abdul Rahim Daoud was killed on Monday “by occupation forces' bullets near the town of Azzun, east of Qalqilya,” in the northern West Bank.
According to the Israeli military, the alleged attacker “shot at an Israeli civilian who was in the town” of Qalqilya, despite the fact that Israel bans its citizens from visiting Palestinian built-up areas.
The Israeli civilian was injured, as were two Palestinians, the army said in a statement.
Hamas later issued a statement regretting the death of Tariq Daoud and claiming he was a member of the organization's armed wing.
Violence has escalated in the West Bank since Hamas's unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, sparking a war in Gaza. At least 619 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers, according to an AFP tally based on official Palestinian figures.
According to official Israeli figures, at least 18 Israelis, including soldiers, were killed in Palestinian attacks in the area during the same period.
