Karachi:
All arrangements have been made at the army’s quarters in Karachi for the burial of Pakistan’s former military ruler General Pervez Musharraf after sunset prayers on Monday, as a special flight from Dubai is expected to bring his body, officials said.
Musharraf, the architect of the 1999 Kargil War and Pakistan’s last military ruler, died in Dubai on Sunday after a long illness.
The 79-year-old retired general, who has been in self-exile in the UAE since 2016, was undergoing treatment for amyloidosis at the American Hospital Dubai.
Official and family sources said Musharraf’s body will be flown back to Karachi via a special flight operated by the UAE Air Force or a chartered flight approved by the Emirati government.
“A time has not yet been set for the arrival of the body, but arrangements have been completed at the Malir Cantt, where he will be buried at Karachi’s Old Army Graveyard. Funeral prayers will be held at the Gulmohar Polo Ground in Malir Cantt,” a source said.
The body of the former military ruler was due to reach Karachi airport on Monday afternoon, but delays in the availability of an aircraft and some other documentation and NoCs procedures between the Pakistani mission in the United Arab Emirates and the Pakistani government have hampered the transport of the body. from Musharraf delayed.
His wife Saba, son Bilal and his daughter will escort the body to Karachi.
Musharraf’s mother was buried in Dubai while his father was buried in Karachi.
A State Department official said the Pakistani mission in the UAE was in contact with Musharraf’s family and facilitated them in every way possible.
“Our missions in the UAE are in contact with his family,” the official said.
Musharraf, who seized power after a bloodless military coup in October 1999 and ousted the elected government of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, ruled Pakistan as chief executive and president until 2008.
The former president and army chief suffered from amyloidosis, a rare disease caused by a buildup of an abnormal protein called amyloid in organs and tissues throughout the body, his family said.
The information secretary of the All Pakistan Muslim League, which Musharraf founded after his retirement, said the family had confirmed that Musharraf’s body would be taken to Karachi on a special plane on Monday.
“All arrangements are now finalized,” said Tahir Hussain.
He said there was still some doubt whether the funeral could be postponed until Tuesday, but all arrangements for the funeral in Malir Cantt have been finalized.
Musharraf, who was born in New Delhi in 1943 and migrated to Pakistan after partition in 1947, was the last military dictator to rule Pakistan.
