A plane that was supposed to carry the Arsenal women’s team back to London after their Champions League draw with Wolfsburg burst into flames on the runway. According to Subwaythe incident took place at Germany’s Braunschweig Wolfsburg Airport on Sunday evening, shortly before a Boeing 737 was due to take off.
An airport spokesperson told German newspaper Bild that a bird strike had caused the engine fire. Witnesses said they heard a loud bang, then the plane came to a stop. Flames erupted from the aircraft, forcing the pilots to abandon takeoff.
Fortunately, all passengers were evacuated and no one was injured in the incident. However, the accident forced the team to stay an extra night in a hotel in Germany.
Arsenal later released a statement confirming that the team had returned home safely on a replacement aircraft on Monday.
