London:
Britain’s Prince Harry has been cleared to challenge a British government decision over his security arrangements in court, a Supreme Court ruling found Friday.
Harry, who moved to the United States with his wife Meghan two years ago, is challenging a decision for him to stop receiving police protection while in Britain, even if he bears the costs himself.
The decision was made in early 2020 by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalties and Public Figures, on behalf of the Ministry of the Interior, the ministry responsible for police, immigration and security.
A judge of the UK Supreme Court has allowed part of Harry’s claim for judicial review of the decision. A judicial review involves a judge examining the legality of the decision of a public body.
Permission for Harry to request judicial review was granted on several grounds, although not all of the reasons the Prince’s legal team had sought, the verdict, published on the court’s website, found.
Harry’s legal representatives were not immediately available for comment. The Interior Ministry did not immediately comment.
Earlier this month, lawyers for Prince Harry, Queen Elizabeth’s grandson, argued in court that the royal household should not have been involved in the UK’s decision to deny him police protection in Britain.
