Ukraine has accused Russian troops of frequent war crimes in the conflict. (representative)
Russia accused the Ukrainian army of deliberately attacking a hospital in a Russian-occupied territory in eastern Ukraine on Saturday.
There was no immediate response to the allegations from Ukraine. Reuters could not independently verify the report.
The alleged attack hit a hospital in the Russian-occupied settlement of Novoaidar and was carried out using a US-supplied HIMARS missile launcher system, Russia’s defense ministry said in a statement.
“An intentional missile strike against a known functioning civilian medical facility is without doubt a serious war crime by the Kiev regime,” the defense ministry said.
“All those involved in the planning and execution of this crime will be found and held accountable.”
Civilian and military medics had been working at the hospital for months to treat local people and soldiers, it said.
Ukraine and its Western allies have accused Russian forces of frequent war crimes in the conflict that have left thousands of civilians dead and cities and towns bombarded by artillery and airstrikes. Russia denies attacking civilians.
