Russia and the Crimean peninsula annexed by Moscow have been hit by a wave of attacks
Moscow:
Russia said it shot down two Ukrainian drones flying over border areas on Sunday after the governor of the Belgorod region said a drone carrying explosives had killed a man.
Russia and the Crimean peninsula annexed by Moscow have been hit by a spate of attacks over the past month, after Kiev warned in July that it wanted to “return” the conflict to Russian territory.
“(During) the night and morning hours… two unmanned aerial vehicles were detected and destroyed in flight over the territory of the Bryansk and Kursk regions,” the Moscow defense ministry said.
The governor of Russia’s Kursk region, which is next to the Ukrainian border, said a drone had crashed into an apartment complex in the city of Kursk overnight, blowing out windows on several floors.
It was not clear if this was one of the drones reportedly shot down earlier by the Defense Department.
“There were no fires and none of the residents were injured,” Governor Roman Starovoit said on social media, sharing an image of what appeared to be a charred spot on a high-rise.
The attack came a day after the governor of the neighboring Russian region of Belgorod said a drone strike killed a man in the village of Shchetinovka, less than a mile (about two kilometers) from the Ukrainian border.
“The Ukrainian armed forces dropped an explosive device from a drone when the man was mowing grass on his plot,” Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Saturday night, announcing that the man died of shrapnel.
Russian regions bordering Ukraine have regularly accused Kiev’s armed forces of indiscriminate shelling and occasional cross-border raids by Ukrainian-backed militants.
Ukraine claims no responsibility for individual attacks on Russian territory, blaming the raids on partisan groups opposed to President Vladimir Putin.
