Mexico City:
A suspected thief opened fire outside Mexico City’s main international airport on Tuesday during a police chase that injured two officers and briefly caused panic among travelers, authorities said.
One officer was shot in the leg and shoulder and another was run over while chasing a man suspected of stealing goods in the airport customs area, the city’s security secretariat said.
The 27-year-old driver accelerated toward a passenger terminal at Mexico City International Airport and collided with several vehicles before being apprehended by police, the report said.
Images shared on social media showed scared employees and travelers hiding behind airport counters.
The airport operator said “no passenger or visitor was endangered” during the incident.
While drug-related violence is widespread in Mexico, shootings in key public spaces are relatively rare in the capital, where the official murder rate is well below the national average.
