Washington:
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Wednesday called on the West to reject “double standards” over the Gaza conflict and joined NATO leaders in supporting Ukraine.
Spain, led by Sanchez, has angered Israel's right-wing government by recognizing a Palestinian state and criticizing Israel's conduct of the war against Hamas.
“If we say to our people that we support Ukraine because we defend international law, then the same applies to what we must do against Gaza,” he said at NATO's 75th anniversary celebrations in Washington.
The Socialist leader said there must be a “consistent political position” in which “we do not apply double standards”.
Sanchez said the world must work to stop “this terrible humanitarian crisis” affecting the Palestinians. He called for an international peace conference to advocate for Palestinian statehood.
“We must create the conditions for an immediate and urgent ceasefire,” he said. “There is a real risk of escalation towards Lebanon.”
Sanchez said he also supports “democracy, freedom and the right of a country like Ukraine to exist.”
NATO leaders issued a statement at the summit saying Kiev was on an “irreversible” path to joining the alliance.
