The left -wing president of Sri Lanka marked the birthday of Independence of Great -Britain on Tuesday with a promise to change the impoverished island nation -image as a “corrupt” country.
Self-valued Marxist Anura Kumara Dissanayake with the usual extensive military page of Jet-Flyovers and horse parades on the occasion of the transfer of power of 1948.
Instead, his government organized a reduced military march in accordance with his promise to make lush editions for the government official.
“We are committed to transforming the worldwide image of Sri Lanka from a country known for corrupt administration,” he said in a message to the nation.
“Despite countless obstacles and the deep -rooted mistakes of the corrupt political system in the past, the folk government, built by the collective will of the citizens, is steadily ahead.”
The government of Dissanayake concluded at the end of last year a long deferred debt restructuring with both bilateral and private creditors, which ended the status of Sri Lanka as a bankrupt nation.
In April 2022, Sri Lanka was in default of the external debt of $ 46 billion after he no longer had a currency to finance the import of food, fuel, medicines and other essence.
The unprecedented economic collapse forced the then President Gotabaya Raja Paksa to resign. His successor, Ranil Wickremesinghe, insured a bailout loan of $ 2.9 billion from the International Monetary Fund.
Dissanayake, who defeated Wickremesinghe in September, maintains the heavy austerity measures introduced under the administration of his predecessor and has sworn to continue the four-year IMF Bailout program.
“If the new government has laid the foundation for a stable economy and introduced a new political culture in the last four months,” Dissanayake said.
