Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Sunday that his government is working on a constitutional amendment to make the president and cabinet accountable to parliament.
Sri Lanka has been rocked by protests over an unprecedented financial crisis, which this month culminated in the resignation of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his cabinet. Ranil Wickremesinghe has promised to solve the problems that led to the crisis.
“Under the new system we have proposed, the president will be accountable to parliament. The cabinet of ministers is also accountable to parliament,” Ranil Wickremesinghe said in a televised address to the nation.
