Cannes:
A woman stripped naked on the red carpet at the Cannes film festival to reveal her body painted in the colors of the Ukrainian flag with the words “Stop raping us” in a solo protest on Friday.
The protester wore red-colored underpants, screamed and posed for photographers before being led away by guards.
The stunt briefly interrupted the parade of evening wear guests, including Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba, who attended the premiere of their George Miller film “Three Thousand Years of Longing.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last month said investigators had received reports of “hundreds of rapes” in areas previously occupied by Russian troops, including assaults on small children.
Zelensky, a former actor, launched a video appeal for help for his country during the opening ceremony of Cannes on Tuesday.
The war was already a major theme at the festival, with a special showing on Thursday of “Mariupolis 2”, a documentary by Lithuanian director Mantas Kvedaravicius, who was murdered in Ukraine last month – allegedly by Russian troops.
Ukraine’s beleaguered filmmakers will have a special day at the industrial market on Saturday, and one of its most promising directors, Sergei Loznitsa, will screen “The Natural History of Destruction,” about the bombing of German cities in World War II.
