Washington:
The aircraft carrier of the USS Harry S. Truman collided with a merchant ship in the Mediterranean Sea, the American Navy said Thursday.
The collision of the warship with the Besiktas-M took place late day, while the courier near Port was active in Egypt, said the American spokesperson for the sixth fleet Timothy Gorman in a statement.
“The collision did not endanger the Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) because there are no reports of floods or injuries. The propulsion installations are not influenced and in a safe and stable state,” Gorman said, adding that the incident was investigated.
The statement did not mention the condition of the Besiktas-M after the collision.
Shipping websites mentioned the trading ship as a bulk carrier that flies the Panamanian flag.
The United States uses aircraft carriers – massive warships that are staffed by thousands of sailors and who transport dozens of planes – in areas around the world.
In December, two American navy pilots were safely ejected after the F/A-18 war plane that they flew from the Truman were wrongly shot over the Red Sea by a rocket cruiser led by the US.
