Health experts have said many Covid patients do not require hospitalization.
A health expert has said the severity of the coronavirus has decreased significantly and cases are noticeably weaker than previous waves, but highlighted three symptoms that still occur. Speak with NBC NewsDr. Erick Eiting said the virus has become so mild that it is difficult to tell whether someone has Covid or a cold. The virus caused a global pandemic more than three years ago, leading to severe restrictions on travel and seriously affecting our immunity.
But now the symptoms are mild, said Dr. Erick Eiting, vice chairman of Mount Sinai Downtown’s emergency medicine department.
“The only way we knew it was COVID was because we happened to be testing them,” Dr. Eiting added.
However, he noted that current symptoms mainly include congestion, occasional sneezing and a mild sore throat.
A long-term study published in The Lancet had linked sore throat to Covid and said the symptom increased after the spread of the 2021 Omicron variant.
Another health expert, Dr. Grace McComsey of Case Western University, said NBC News that a loss of taste and smell now affects only about 10 to 20 percent of Covid patients, down from 60 to 70 percent during the early pandemic.
Both doctors also said that fewer patients require intensive hospital care compared to last year.
The coronavirus causes illnesses ranging from the common cold to more serious illnesses such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). It is known to have originated in Wuhan, China in late 2019.
