Washington:
On the first day of his first term, newly elected President Donald Trump had signed just one executive order, which targeted Obamacare. But this time he has promised quite a few orders. Here are a few.
Mass deportation program
Trump's immigration plans are an important aspect of his daily agenda. He has promised to launch a mass deportation program targeting undocumented migrants. “On day one, I will launch the largest deportation program in American history to get the criminals out,” Trump said at a rally in New York City. This promise has raised concerns among immigration advocates, who argue that such a program would be logistically challenging and potentially harmful.
End birthright
Trump has also pledged to end birthright citizenship, a right granted under the 14th Amendment to anyone born in the United States. This move would likely come with significant legal and logistical challenges. Asked if he plans to end Birthright on Day One, Trump said: “Absolutely.” In addition, Trump has pledged to end any open borders policy of the Biden administration. He has even said he will “use Title 42,” a public health law that allows for faster deportation of migrants.
Excuse the Capitol Hill rioters
On the pardon issue, Trump has pledged to pardon defendants convicted for their role in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol. “I'm looking at day one,” Trump said when asked about his timeline for pardons. He has also stated that he would consider pardoning defendants charged with violent crimes, saying, “We are looking at it.” The move has sparked controversy, with many arguing that pardoning those involved in the January 6 attack would undermine the rule of law. Additionally, he told Time magazine, “I'll watch J6 early on, maybe the first nine minutes.”
Ending the war between Russia and Ukraine
On the foreign policy front, Trump has made the bold claim that he can end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office, if not sooner. “That is a war that can almost be settled. I will make sure it's resolved before I become president,” Trump said during a debate with Vice President Kamala Harris. “I know [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy very well, and I know it [Russian President Vladimir] Putin very well. I have a good relationship and they respect your president, okay, they respect me. They don't respect Biden,” Trump added.
Implementation of tariffs
Trump has also promised to impose tariffs on products imported from Mexico and Canada, two of America's largest trading partners. The move has raised concerns among economists, who argue that such tariffs could have drastic and damaging effects on the U.S. economy.
“On January 20, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% tariff on ALL products entering the United States, and the ridiculous open borders,” said Trump in a message. at Truth Social on November 25. He even called the word rate “the most beautiful word in the whole dictionary of words.”
End Biden's 'electric vehicle mandate'
On economic issues, Trump has promised to revoke the electric vehicle “mandate” put in place by the Biden administration. “The day I take office, I will repeal Crooked Joe's mandate on electric vehicles,” Trump said at a campaign event in Houston.
The mandate Trump is talking about is an order Biden signed that sets a national goal that calls for 50% of new cars and trucks sold to be emissions-free by 2030. In March, the Environmental Protection Agency finalized tailpipe emissions limits and electric vehicles were expected to help achieve these goals. Trump has called these “electric vehicle mandates,” although no one is required to buy a specific type of car.
Drill, drill, drill
He has also pledged to expand oil drilling in the United States, saying, “Drill, drill, drill” during a town hall interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity. According to Trump, increasing oil production in the US would drastically reduce energy costs.
The move has raised concerns among environmental groups, who argue that more oil drilling would worsen climate change.
Ban transgender athletes from women's sports
Trump's stance on transgender rights has been a controversial topic. He has repeatedly referred to transgender women as men and has pledged to limit transgender women's participation in women's sports, saying, “I will immediately, from day one, keep men out of women's sports 100%.”
End gender-affirming healthcare practices
Trump has also pledged to end gender-affirming health care practices, including hormone therapy. “On day one, I will repeal Joe Biden's cruel policies on so-called 'gender-affirming care,'” Trump said in a video on his campaign website. The move has sparked outrage among LGBTQ+ advocates, who claim such a policy would be discriminatory and harmful.
American automotive industry
Additionally, Trump has promised to revive the American auto industry, saying that “a vote for President Trump means the future of the car will be made in America.” He has also vowed to promote American energy sourced from American suppliers and built by American workers. The move has sparked enthusiasm among some in the auto industry, who see Trump's promises as a potential boon for American manufacturing.
As Trump prepares to take office, it is not yet certain which of these promises he will prioritize and how he will implement them. One thing is certain, however: Trump's agenda for today is ambitious and far-reaching, with the potential to shape the course of his presidency and the future of the United States.
