We really have to stop that war, Trump said in Davos. (FILE)
DAVOS Switzerland:
US President Donald Trump said on Thursday he wanted to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin soon to end the nearly three-year war with Ukraine, lamenting what he called the enormous loss of life.
In the run-up to his November 5 election victory, Trump stated dozens of times that he would make a deal between Ukraine and Russia on his first day in office, if not sooner. His advisers now admit that it will take months for the war to be resolved.
“I would very much like to meet with President Putin soon to end that war,” Trump, who returned to the White House on Monday, told the World Economic Forum in Davos via video link.
“And that's not from the standpoint of economics or anything else. It's from the standpoint of millions of lives being wasted… It's a bloodbath. And we really need to stop that war.”
Trump also said U.S. efforts to broker a peace settlement are now hopefully underway, but gave no details.
