Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan raised the Kashmir issue during his address to world leaders at the 78th high-level session of the UN General Assembly here.
“Another development that will pave the way for regional peace, stability and prosperity in South Asia will be the establishment of a just and lasting peace in Kashmir through dialogue and cooperation between India and Pakistan,” Erdogan said in his speech on Tuesday to the General Debate. .
“As Turkiye, we will continue to support the steps in this direction,” he said.
His comments come weeks after he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G20 summit in New Delhi, where both leaders discussed strengthening trade and infrastructure ties.
Erdogan said it was a matter of pride that India played a role in the United Nations Security Council. He said he was in favor of making five permanent and 15 “temporary” members permanent members of the UN Security Council.
“Those twenty (5+15) should be permanent members of the UN Security Council on a rotating basis. But as you know, the world is bigger than five. When we say the world is bigger than five, we mean it’s not just the US, UK, France, China and Russia,” he said.
In recent years, the Turkish leader has referred to the Kashmir issue in his address to world leaders at the high-level UN General Assembly.

“India and Pakistan, after establishing their sovereignty and independence 75 years ago, have still not established peace and solidarity between each other. This is very unfortunate. We hope and pray that fair and permanent peace and prosperity will be established in Kashmir,” Erdogan said.
In 2020, Erdogan had made a reference to Jammu and Kashmir in his pre-recorded video statement for the General Debate. India had at the time called it “completely unacceptable” and said Turkey must learn to respect the sovereignty of other countries and think more deeply about its own policies.
