Brussels, Belgium:
Two people were killed in a shooting in Brussels on Monday evening and the suspect was on the run, the Belgian capital’s public prosecutor’s office said.
The alleged gunman wearing a fluorescent orange jacket fled the scene after using an automatic rifle, according to a video shared by Flemish newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws.
A video claiming responsibility for the shooting is circulating on social media, showing a man speaking Arabic, a source close to the case said.
A spokeswoman for the Public Prosecution Service told AFP that an investigation had been opened but did not speculate on the gunman’s motive.
The federal prosecutor responsible for terrorism cases investigated whether there was any possible terrorist motivation for the attack.
The shooting took place in the northern districts of the capital. Police were informed of the incident after 7:00 PM local time (5:00 PM GMT).
Police have cordoned off the area where the shooting took place.
