Moscow:
Russia said on Sunday it had foiled a “massive” Ukrainian drone attack by shooting down 158 drones in 15 regions, including two over the capital Moscow.
A coal-fired power plant near the city was reported to have been hit, as well as an oil refinery within city limits.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that the most drones, 122, were shot down over the Kursk, Bryansk, Voronezh and Belgorod regions, which border Ukraine.
“Our defenders are repelling an attempted large-scale attack with an unmanned aerial vehicle on the territory of the Bryansk region,” said regional governor Alexander Bogomaz.
The barrage comes just days after Ukraine's energy infrastructure was targeted by more than 200 Russian drones and missiles in one of the largest attacks of its kind.
It has been almost a month since Ukraine launched its offensive in Russia's Kursk region, while Russian troops continue their steady advance in eastern Ukraine.
Both sides have been targeting energy infrastructure since Russia launched its campaign in Ukraine in February 2022.
A local official in the Moscow region reported that three drones had attempted to hit the Kashira coal-fired power plant.
“There have been no casualties and no damage,” he said, adding that electricity is still reaching customers “correctly.”
Russian news agencies also reported a fire at Moscow's Kapotnya oil refinery, although Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said there was “no damage or casualties”.
In the Belgorod region, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said: “The glass of three residential buildings in Belgorod was damaged. In one private house, a utility building was completely destroyed.”
On Wednesday, Ukrainian drones attacked and set fire to two fuel depots in the Rostov region in southwestern Russia and the Kirov region in the north.
