Washington:
The United States on Tuesday announced a new $250 million military aid package for Ukraine, including mine and obstacle clearance equipment.
Kiev’s forces are struggling to make substantial gains in a counter-offensive launched earlier this summer that came up against strong Russian defenses, including minefields, trenches and tank obstacles.
The aid will “help Ukraine counter Russia’s ongoing war of aggression on the battlefield and protect its people,” the Pentagon said in a statement.
Also included in the package are air defense missiles, artillery rounds, anti-armour missiles and over three million small arms ammunition.
The United States has taken the lead in pushing international support for Ukraine, quickly forging an international coalition to support Kiev after Russia invaded in February 2022, and coordinating aid from dozens of countries.
Washington has committed to providing tens of billions of dollars in military aid to Kyiv since the start of the Russian invasion.
“I am grateful to the entire American people, Congress and personally President Joseph Biden…for the new defense package,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on Z, formerly known as Twitter.
“Freedom needs protection, and this protection is getting stronger,” he added.
