A military plane crashed in Southern California on Wednesday, a Marine spokesman said.
There was no immediate report of casualties, but the military denied reports that the plane had been carrying radioactive material when it crashed near Glamis, just 35 kilometers from the Mexican border.
“We can confirm that a 3d Marine Aircraft Wing plane has crashed near Glamis,” a spokesman told AFP.
“Military and civilian first responders are on the scene. Contrary to social media rumors, there was no nuclear material on board the plane.”
The nearby Marine Corps Air Station Yuma is home to a number of MV-22 Ospreys.
The Osprey is a so-called “vertical take-off and landing” aircraft with rotating wings that can be pointed upward to give it the maneuverability of a helicopter, or forward to give it the range of an aircraft.
The US military has had a number of crashes with the plane, including an accident in Norway in March that killed four Marines.
