Washington:
The White House said on Monday that US support for Ukraine’s war effort will be “steadfast” even if Republicans, who have expressed concerns about spending levels, win midterm elections.
“We are confident that the support of the United States will be unwavering and unwavering,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.
She said President Joe Biden is “committed to work in a bipartisan way, as he has, to support Ukraine”.
Kevin McCarthy, who will become Speaker of the House of Representatives if Republicans take over, recently warned that there would be no “blank check” for Ukraine if his party is in charge.
Ukraine’s fight against the Russian invasion enjoys the support of much of the Republican base, although far-right lawmakers close to former President Donald Trump have criticized it.
Some Trump-inspired Republicans have attacked the level of US aid to Ukraine, including $40 billion approved in May on bipartisan lines and a Biden request for another $11.2 billion.
But Mitch McConnell, the Senate’s top Republican, has vowed to go beyond Biden and use fast weapons, including those with longer ranges, while Mike Pence, who was Trump’s vice president, recently aimed directly at critics of arming Ukraine.
