Tonight’s shooting at the Texas State Fair in Texas reminds us that gun violence is far too common in our society. Allowing a permit to transport individuals who bring a gun to a crowded event, such as the State Fair, is not good policy and does not make the event safer. pic.twitter.com/z9B3gqu6LA

An eyewitness told CBS News: “We just got to the Ferris wheel and heard screaming. We didn’t hear any shots and then everyone started running towards the exit. The workers didn’t want to tell us what happened and just told us. The fair was closed for us. There were a lot of police who were heavily armed at the exits and the police were very strict all the time and suggested everyone go home.”

Dallas Councilman Adam Bazaldua said the shooting was “the result of a conflict between two people who knew each other.” Police later identified the suspect as 22-year-old Cameron Turner and charged him with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The State Fair of Texas issued a statement Sunday morning saying the team is “deeply saddened by last night’s incident at the fairgrounds.”
It went on to say, “Safety is the first priority of the State Fair of Texas. We are committed to maintaining the level of safety necessary to ensure that the State Fair of Texas event is a safe and family-friendly environment for all fairgoers, vendors, and employees. We look forward to welcoming guests today (Sunday 15/10) from 2:00 PM. We ask everyone to remain “Fair Aware”. If you see something that does not look right on the fairgrounds, please say so please something for a uniformed police officer or a member of the State Fair Safety Team.
Notably, the Texas State Fair allows people with valid gun permits to carry their weapons “in a concealed manner.” The fair plans to improve security during the final week of operations.
