Washington, United States:
A Virginia man has been charged with making violent threats online against Vice President Kamala Harris, days after she began her campaign for the U.S. presidency.
Frank Carillo was charged Friday in federal court in Virginia with threatening the vice president after he posted a series of messages directed at Kamala Harris on the social media site GETTR, court documents show.
Kamala Harris is the Democratic candidate who will face Republican former President Donald Trump in the presidential election on November 5.
“Kamala Harris needs to be burned alive. I will do it personally if no one else will,” read one message cited in court documents. Another said Kamala Harris “is going to regret running for president.”
The posts were made on July 27, six days after President Joe Biden announced he would not seek re-election and endorsed Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.
The account also posted messages targeting Biden and FBI Director Christopher Wray.
According to court documents, FBI agents seized a rifle and a firearm during a search of Frank Carillo's home.
Frank Carillo was scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday. Information about Frank Carillo's attorney was not immediately available.
U.S. Justice Department officials are concerned about what they say is an increase in threats against government officials in the United States.
Trump was wounded in an assassination attempt at a campaign rally last month. Officials have not identified a motive for the shooting.
