WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange married longtime partner Stella Moris on Wednesday in a high-security prison in south-east London in a small ceremony attended by four guests, two official witnesses and two guards.
Assange is being asked by US authorities to face 18 charges related to WikiLeaks releasing large amounts of confidential US military documents and diplomatic telegrams.
The 50-year-old, who denies doing anything wrong, has been held in Belmarsh Prison since 2019 and was previously held in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for seven years.
While living at the embassy, he fathered two children with Moris, a lawyer more than a decade his junior, whom he met in 2011 when she started working on his legal team. Their relationship started in 2015.
The Registrar-led ceremony will take place during visiting hours at the prison, where some of Britain’s most notorious criminals served their sentences, including child murderer Ian Huntley.
Moris’s wedding dress and Assange’s kilt – a nod to his family ties to Scotland – were created by British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, who has previously campaigned against his extradition.
Assange was denied permission this month to appeal to the British Supreme Court against a decision to extradite him to the United States. He could still challenge any government decision to approve his extradition.
