Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:
Authorities have distributed smart cards to nearly 650 inmates of the Harsul Central Jail in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city to help them stay in touch with their relatives and lawyers, an official said today.
The smart cards allow inmates to make three free calls a week, six minutes each, a district official said in a news release.
“Many families are unable to meet their inmate relatives in prison due to financial circumstances. To connect the prisoners with their families (and lawyers), smart cards have been issued to 650 prisoners in Harsul Prison,” the release said.
However, the release did not specify whether the inmates can call only the numbers previously shared with the prison authorities or whichever number they choose.
The facility – a call booth – has been made available on the prison premises for both the inmates and those under judicial custody, the report said.
Harsul Correctional Facility is one of the nine central prisons in Maharashtra.
