The Walt Disney Company unveiled its new theatrical slate on Friday, which includes a film about the Mandalorian and Grogu, a fifth “Toy Story” film and another “Tron” film before the end of 2026.
The company's theater business has struggled in the wake of pandemic shutdowns and twin labor strikes in Hollywood, as productions stalled and moviegoers' box office habits changed. All the while, Disney struggled to connect with audiences, further exacerbating its revenue problems.
Since returning to the helm at Disney in late 2022, CEO Bob Iger has been working to right the ship. He admits that the quality of the films has suffered in his attempt to push out a large amount of entertainment content.
He said brands like Marvel in particular needed to be more selective about which sequels are made.
Iger also said he would no longer tolerate his company's partners and creative team prioritizing messaging over storytelling.
Disney's updated version includes several iconic franchises, as well as some releases for adult audiences.
Notably, the company's Moana sequel has been pushed back to July 2026. It was originally scheduled to open in 2025.
“The Amateur,” a 20th century production starring Oscar winner Rami Malek, has been moved to April 2025 from its previous date of November 2024. And “Nightbitch,” a Searchlight feature starring Amy Adams, will be released in December 2024.
Disney teased that one of 2026's Star Wars films would feature the iconic duo from the Disney+ series 'The Mandalorian', revealing that the title will be 'The Mandalorian & Grogu'. It is scheduled for a theatrical release on May 22, 2026.
A fifth “Toy Story” film will hit theaters on June 19, 2026, and “Tron: Ares” is scheduled for an October 10, 2025 release.
