Cricket World Cup: Babar Azam in press conference© Twitter
There is probably no person in the cricketing world who is under more pressure than Pakistan captain Babar Azam. After a dismal campaign at the 2023 Cricket World Cup – losing three of the first five matches – Pakistan see their semi-final hopes hanging by a thread. The situation is such that Babar’s skills as a captain are also in the line of fire, with fans, pundits and many former cricketers wondering whether he even has what it takes to succeed as a skipper.
There are those who feel that responsibility as captain is the reason behind Babar’s poor show with the bat in the World Cup. When asked the same at the post-match press conference, the Pakistan captain played down the talks.
News reporter: Your emotions tell us that you are sad, just like the whole nation is sad. What message would you give to the crores? [millions] of the people in Pakistan who follow this team? This team’s question is incomplete: Do they have expectations? And does the extra burden of captaincy affect your individual performance? What do you think about the team’s incomplete performance and the added weight of the captain?

Babar Azam:You never know. It’s cricket. Everything can happen. We will try to play our best cricket till the end. There are still many matches left, we will try to win all the matches. We will try to overcome our mistakes.
As far as the captaincy is concerned, I don’t have much pressure on me or my batting. I try to do my best when batting. I’m 100% and I did that. While fielding I think about the captain and while batting I only think about batting. How to run and how to run for the team.
