Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting believes that the team that plays more “attacking batting” will win the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 title. This season was one for hitters; in 31 matches, teams have managed to achieve a score of 200 or more in nine matches. Sunrisers Hyderabad have broken the record for highest score in the IPL twice this season. They scored 277/3 against Mumbai Indians in Hyderabad, surpassing Royal Challengers Bengaluru's total of 263/5, achieved in 2013 with the help of Chris Gayle's 175*.
They then broke their record against Royal Challengers Bengaluru by posting a staggering score of 287/3 in Bengaluru.
Before the match, Ponting expressed his views on the team being willing to put more runs on the board instead of bowling defensively and win the title.
“It looks like that's where the game is going. Sunrisers [Hyderabad, SRH] are obviously responsible for some of them [big scores]. KKR got around 260 [272 for 7] against us. I think the impact player has a big effect on the way teams hit. You looked at the way Travis [Head] hit last night. You can't bat like that unless you have confidence in the players below you and you also bat deep in your batting order,” Ponting said in his pre-match press conference.
“Very often, big tournaments like the IPL and the Big Bash in Australia are won by the best defensive bowling teams. But the way this IPL is going – and [with] the different rules in the IPL – it looks like it will be won by the team most willing to go bowling and get some really big scores. I think it is potentially more attacking batting that will win this IPL than defensive bowling,” he added.
While teams continue to pile up runs on the board, DC are struggling to follow the same path and find themselves at the ninth spot ahead of their match against the Gujarat Titans on Wednesday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
