Star Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batsman Virat Kohli surpassed current Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Shikhar Dhawan to become the second player to hit most half-centuries in a run-chase in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 35-year-old chaser achieved the milestone during RCB's match against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday in IPL 2024. Kohli played an unbeaten knock of 70 runs off 44 balls at a massive strike rate of 159.09. He hammered 6 fours and 3 upper boundaries against GT.
With 24 half-centuries chasing a target, Kohli is second in the list. Dhawan is at third position with 23 fifty-plus scores. Meanwhile, David Warner ranks first with 35 half-centuries while chasing a target. However, for an Indian, Virat has the Numero Uno spot.
The fiery partnership between Virat Kohli and Will Jacks, which spanned 133 occasions, has also etched the record books. It was the highest partnership scored against Gujarat Titans in the history of the IPL. Meanwhile, the 130-run partnership of Rajasthan Royals' Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag ranks second in terms of the highest partnership scored against the Gujarat-based partnership.
Kohli also equaled David Warner's record of 500+ runs in IPL seasons. Both Kohli and Warner have crossed the 500-run mark seven times in an IPL season.
To sum up the match, RCB won the toss and decided to play against GT. After this, Sai Sudharsan (84) and Shahrukh Khan (58) showed great performances to take GT to 200/3.
The RCB bowlers were sloppy in the opening of the match. Maxwell, Siraj and Swapnil were the only wicket-takers for the visitors.
During the chase, Virat Kohli (70) and Will Jacks (100) gave RCB their third win of the season by beating GT by 9 wickets.
Sai Kishore was the sole wicket-taker for GT after dismissing Faf du Plessis in the fourth over.
After the win, RCB are still at the bottom position in the IPL 2024 standings with six points. Meanwhile, GT is in seventh place with 8 points after winning four of its ten matches.
