Australian head coach Andrew McDonald on Saturday praised David Warner, saying he is probably the best Australian player across all formats. Speaking to cricket.com.au ahead of the third Test match against Pakistan, McDonald said Warner's retirement from the Test format would be a big loss for the Australian side. The Australian head coach added that it would be difficult to find a replacement for the left-handed batsman. “With time he will probably go down… but probably right now he is probably our best ever player in all three formats. He will step out of one of those formats when it comes to test match cricket” He will take a loss are. I know people have been chasing him for a while, but for us internally we have seen the great value of what he brings to the table, which is why we have continued to pick him.” repaid some of that faith in the first Test match. He will be hard to replace. Someone who averages 45 at the age of 70, and makes the most ever appearances as an Australian opener,” McDonald said.
Speaking about Australia's performance in 2023, McDonald said they had a successful year.
“…It's been a long twelve months, we've had twelve successful months. So at the end of that we can sit back and celebrate as a team the success we've had, another series win here. We also want 3- 0 out of it and then be able to appreciate what Davey has brought to Australian cricket,” he added.
After the third Test against Pakistan at his home ground, Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), from January 3 to 7, Warner will call time on a legendary Test career.
