The upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) marks the beginning of a new era of leadership at Gujarat Titans (GT). The 2022 champions will be led by young batsman Shubman Gill following the trade of Hardik Pandya to Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2024 mini-auction. With a mix of youth and experience, the franchise made some sensible purchases at the IPL auction. While the franchise brought in Australian pacer Spencer Johnson and experienced Indian fast bowler Umesh Yadav, GT also bought uncapped batsman Shahrukh Khan for Rs 7.4 crore.
Ahead of the start of the new season, Nehra has backed Shahrukh to become the “main player” for GT in the lower mid-range.
“We will see Shahrukh Khan become the main player. IPL is a very long tournament,” Nehra told the media.
Nehra also emphasized that the players should take care of the body as the conditions will be tough in the final stages of the tournament.
“It's not like we're only playing three, four, five matches. The conditions are also difficult in May and June. It will be difficult for the players, especially fast bowlers. Injuries can also happen. So every player we have is important and the ones we have are experienced,” he added.
Nehra also said that newcomers Johnson and Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai will have to play key roles for the team.
“Spencer Johnson, wherever he has played, he has played well. Azmatullah Omarzai has all the skills in the world as an all-rounder and we are hopeful that they will have a great IPL,” Nehra explained. .
Speaking about the type of pitches for their home matches, Nehra said they are yet to decide on the same.
“We haven't decided that, but I don't think so… At the end of the day you just have to play good cricket. Black soil or red soil, there's not that much difference. It's just a bit of a bounce,” the former India said. pacemaker suggested.
