T20 World Cup 2024: File photo of Hardik Pandya© BCCI
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar on Wednesday defended the selection of under-fire Hardik Pandya in India's T20 World Cup squad, saying “there is no substitute for what he can do” when the flamboyant all-rounder is fit and also provides balance to the side. Hardik, who is going through a very difficult IPL season as captain of Mumbai Indians, was not only named in the Indian team for the upcoming showpiece but was also named vice-captain of the team, leaving many in the cricket fraternity surprised.
Hardik last played in an international match for India during the ODI World Cup match against Bangladesh in October 2023.
“Nothing has been discussed about the vice-captain. He has come through all the matches for Mumbai Indians so far. We still have a month and a bit before our first match. As long as he is fit, there is no substitute for what he can do doing.” Agarkar told reporters when asked about the selection of the all-rounder.
“He comes after a long layoff. We hope he works on it. Especially the way he bowls will give (captain) Rohit a lot of balance and options.”
Hardik recovered well in time from an ankle injury ahead of the IPL 2024 and was named captain of the five-time champions in place of Rohit – a decision that drew widespread criticism.
Agarkar also said that KL Rahul has missed out on a spot in the Indian T20 World Cup squad as they were looking for “guys” who can bat in the middle, paving the way for the inclusion of Sanju Samson as the team's second wicketkeeper .
“KL is a great player, we all know that. What we were looking for are guys who bat in the middle and KL at the top. We think Sanju has the ability to move up the rankings. Rishabh bats at 5, Dat was more the thought too. Two incredible players,” Agarkar said.
