Former Team India selector Sarandeep Singh said spinner Ravichandran Ashwin misinterpreted ex-head coach Ravi Shastri’s comment on Kuldeep Yadav. Kuldeep had taken a five-wicket haul in Sydney Test in 2019 and Shastri had dubbed the leg spinner “India’s No. 1 overseas spinner”. While the match ended in a draw, India won the series Down Under. Ashwin later expressed disappointment at Shastri’s comment, saying he felt “crushed”. “I have a lot of appreciation for Ravi Bhai. We all do. And I understand that we can all say things and then retract them. At that moment, however, I felt crushed. Absolutely crushed. We all talk about how important it is about your success from teammates,” ESPNcricinfo quoted Ashwin as saying.
Meanwhile, speaking to ANI, Sarandeep Singh said: “Ashwin misinterpreted the comment. I was also at the Team India tour that Shastri is talking about. He meant to say that Kuldeep is a better bowler for us in touring abroad because his bowling style is different and Ashwin took it in a different way and yes Shastri is right, it’s not his job to make everyone a toast.”
“Ashwin is a great bowler who has produced a good bowling style in the African conditions. He can also be a game changer for us. I don’t think this will be his last tour as he has a lot to perform.” he added.

As for Virat Kohli, Sarandeep Singh feels he will play with a free spirit in the Test series against South Africa.
“He is mentally fit and I have a feeling he will play with a free spirit. Nothing to do with the captaincy controversy will affect his game and he will hit exactly like he did before. We can hope for a century from him because he has a good, balanced team this time,” said Sarandeep Singh.
