Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad gave a special mention to star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and termed his performance with the ball as a “match-turning spell” after CSK's 78-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the ongoing Indian Premier League on Sunday. In front of a sold-out crowd at Chepauk, CSK exerted control in all facets of the match and put SRH's backs against the wall. While they sealed a comfortable win over the high-flying SRH side, the influential spell of experienced pacer Tushar Deshpande played a crucial role in it.
He scalped four, two of which came in his first part of the night. He ended the evening with 4/27 in his three-over spell.
While Deshpande played with the ball, Gaikwad highlighted Jadeja's spell and stated that his continuation with the ball was “match-turning” due to the wet conditions.
“He bowls very well (Deshpande). His hard work is paying off. Special mention also to Jaddu. In these wet conditions to score 22 runs, that was the match that turned the game around,” Gaikwad said in the presentation after the contest. .
The veteran spinner produced an economical four-over spell in which he gave away 22 runs and took a crucial wicket of Nitish Reddy.
CSK were put into bat after SRH skipper Pat Cummins won the toss. Gaikwad, who fell two runs shy of his second ton in the current season, reflected on the missed opportunity and praised his team's overall performance.
“It feels quite good. Difficult to play in such wet conditions, and to be able to win by 70 runs is a clinical achievement. It was a blessing in disguise at the toss. I wasn't thinking about a hundred. I definitely wanted to I was disappointed that I missed 4-5 goals at the back. During the break I felt it could make a difference, but fortunately there were enough loose balls here and there,” said Gaikwad.
“Today we were excellent in the field. We stuck to the plans and knew what the conditions were. With the Impact Player rule you always want the extra 20 runs. Never know what the par score is. That was one area: not taking wickets powerplay is the only way it can put the opposition in the background,” Gaikwad added.
To sum up the match, after SRH put CSK into bat, Gaikwad's (98) and Daryl Mitchell's (52) heroics, combined with Shivam Dube's (39*) cameo saw CSK move to 212/3.
In response, SRH struggled to form partnerships and bundled up at 134.
